Poker Tourneys & Cash Games: the Differences

There is a great deal of diversity between Poker cash games and playing in a tournament. Although both events may utilize the same variant (i.e., No Limit Holdem) that does not mean that you should make a similar approach or apply the same strategies and tactics.

There are a lot of things that set the two apart. Among the most important is the role of the chip stack. In Poker cash games, you can take a lot more risks. There will be times when even if the odds of making the hand are quite low, you will still take the chance particularly if the pot is big. Besides, there is always the option of getting more chips if you run out.

In Poker tourneys, there is no such option. Unless there is a specified re buy period (and very few of the big tournaments do), once you lose your chips on a bad call or raise, they are gone and cannot be replaced. But more than the dollars that you lose, the stack represents your ticket to the latter tables, the ones that will actually pay you the big money.

For this reason, in Poker tourney plays, it is much more advisable to play it safe. It is better to forfeit a few dollars in the pot rather than risk losing a majority of your stack.

Another big difference between Poker cash games and tourneys is the way that you play. When playing for cash, either online, in casinos or in home games, you can adopt different types of styles, depending on the way the game is being played by the other players. Home games are typically loose, while those online and in casinos are a combination of tight aggressive and loose aggressive.

In Poker tourneys, your style of play has to be more consistent. You have to be solid and tight in the preliminary tables, loosen a bit and accumulate chips in the middle stages, and be the aggressor in the final tables and in the heads up.

There are of course some variations to this strategy, but overall, especially for beginners, this style of play is usually the best way to proceed. All you have to do is look at the guides on the Internet and you will that this is the method they advocate.

These are just some of the major aspects that set apart tournaments from cash games. By knowing the appropriate modifications that you will need to perform, you will have a better chance of winning in Poker tourneys.
